Day 23
January 24, 2017Tonight was a dark, oppressive night. The conversation heady and morose, the rain constant. Felt good to get out, if even for a short while, and take a look at the world.
Tonight was a dark, oppressive night. The conversation heady and morose, the rain constant. Felt good to get out, if even for a short while, and take a look at the world.
Today was a stay inside, do nothing, maintain optimal laziness, cook food and make cocktails from scratch kind of day. This round, I went with a Salted Grapefruit Bourbon Martini, starting with this salty sweet simple syrup and squeezing out a bunch of grapefruits. I will do this again.
Without a helicopter, it’s impossible to capture the absolutely awe-inspiring scale of the NYC Women’s March. There were an incomprehensible number of us marching at a snail’s pace, and there was such positivity in the air, all enjoying a shared noble purpose. And even more awesome is the knowledge that NYC was but one city in dozens that pulled off the same feat at the exact same time.
My camera was stolen today. This is a huge bummer. So there’s no photo to offer today. Instead, I’ll reach back to my Japan trip and show you the last glimpse of the Tsukiji Fish Market you’ll ever get to see.
Between a meeting to discuss post-election action/advocacy and some good, solid cathartic rock climbing, I found myself with some time to spare near the World Trade Center. The Oculus really is a feat of design and engineering. And it’s rare to find such a lonely scene in such a crowded place, but I found it a lovely image to capture.
I came out of a play at Dixon Place to a fire truck rolled up onto the curb to my left. To my right was this cadre of firefighters intensely subduing a trash bag.
For whatever reason, I really enjoyed walking around in the rain this evening.
It’s fun finding yourself in new neighborhoods in NY. There’s always something that catches your attention, even, for whatever reason, if it’s something that you see every day elsewhere. Tonight, watching this monstrously long train cross the entire horizon as it passed by was mesmerizing to me.
Today, we really tried our best to avoid making plans. A lazy Sunday at last! Going to do nothing at all but stroll to a coffee shop, read our newest books, and just not worry about anything.
This lasted like 30 minutes.
Today was as varied as it was nuts, and as usual on such days, Ilanna was a trooper; a constant positive force making the entirety of the day’s mayhem exciting and happy.
I’m trying to avoid capturing the every day obvious stuff, and the Barclays Center qualifies. But. I was trapped inside today, and managed to roam around the neighborhood a very small bit. So this is what we’ve got today.
Tonight I went to Honest Accomplice’s thoughtful reconFIGUREd show, and afterward found myself strolling, as I very, very rarely do, through Times Square, where sometimes you see kids forming into a human pyramid.
I remember hearing years ago that “no New Yorker looks up.” I’ve always felt like something of an awkward New Yorker. If you don’t look up, you miss so much.
Bokeh: the visual quality of the out-of-focus areas of a photographic image, especially as rendered by a particular lens.
Fort Greene at Night
Every day.
It’s snowed relentlessly today. Not too much to show for it, but then, the day’s not yet complete!
It took eleven years living in NYC for me to finally make it into the Guggenheim and actually walk the spiral. I may never really get modern art, but the people watching inside the Frank Lloyd Wright masterpiece is worth the price of admission.
My brother and his family are in town, and on the way to the New Museum to meet up with them, we stop at this cart, which Ilanna has been craving for ages. They pour a thin layer of rice porridge onto a tray, sprinkle on the protein of your choosing, and steam it for a couple minutes. The result is this incredible ready-made noodle roll to warm up your incredible frigid walk.
This poor kid was crying for attention as he lagged far behind who I assumed was his father.
Today was an inside day.
My primary photographic interest is in street photography. The ability to get out there and capture uninterrupted and uninfluenced moments in the real world is a scary and immense thrill.
The problem I have with this is that, as a freelancer, I so frequently spend entire days at home working on my computer and too often never see daylight. It’s a terrible habit, and one I’m hoping to be better at breaking.
Today, it was a very conscious effort to get out while there was a bit of daylight, and in that brief and rainy moment, my options were limited. I pass by this brand new building fairly frequently, and I think it may be growing on me. Brooklyn is changing, no more so than right at my front door. All I can do is watch it happen and shoot what I see!
I’m giving this daily photo idea a shot. The general idea, my motivation, is to take my camera with me everywhere I go, shoot every day, and use this as a proving ground. This is a photo taken in Kyoto and is obviously not from today, but it’s a start!
I went to Superfine in DUMBO this evening, and was fascinated by the lighting patterns from their holiday decorations.
